Where the term comes from
It is worth asking what the word adds. Outlining a building traces its edges. Architectural lighting picks out what the building is made of. One treats the house as a shape. The other reads the gables, the columns, the entry and the stone.None of that requires an architect or a vocabulary test. It does mean expecting one thing: can whoever is quoting you explain what they are lighting and why. If the answer describes your building, you are talking to a designer. If it is about the hardware, you are talking to a salesperson.
Which features carry the design
Look at almost any house and there are two or three features doing the heavy lifting. A front gable. A covered entry. A set of dormers. A change in material. A deep porch. Those are where the design starts, and everything else is there to hold them together.
Why even light is the wrong goal
Most people assume brighter is better. It is the wrong instinct. Depth comes from contrast, and the dark sections carry as much of the design as the bright ones. Even coverage flattens the facade, which is not what the money was for.A building lit this way reads as considered rather than decorated, and most people notice it without being able to name why.
Residential and commercial
On a house, the brief is curb appeal and a well lit approach to the door. On a commercial building, the job adds a second requirement: the building has to be legible from the road after dark and it has to look open. Company colors on a building reach the road before the sign does.
Where the LED system fits
A permanent LED system is architectural lighting that also happens to do holidays. Set to a warm white, it lights the architecture. Switched to color, it becomes seasonal.
Grazing, and the other techniques in plain terms
There are three moves worth knowing. A wash spreads light broadly. Grazing exaggerates texture. Uplighting points from the ground upward, which suits vertical features and little else.
Color temperature is a design choice
White is not one color, and buildings react to it differently. Warm feels domestic, and it makes earth toned materials look right. Cooler white works on contemporary buildings and grey masonry, though it goes cold and clinical fast. Mixing them on one building is the mistake to avoid.
Where to begin if you want this done properly
The order matters: look at the building, draw the plan, then talk hardware. A plan drawn for your house will
